Defend Your Teeth Against Damage

Your teeth are incredibly strong, but they are not indestructible. Chronic teeth grinding (bruxism) during sleep can exert hundreds of pounds of pressure, leading to worn enamel, cracked teeth, and severe jaw pain. Similarly, sports injuries are a leading cause of tooth loss in young adults.

At Carmel Family Dental, we provide custom-crafted night guards and sports mouthguards. Unlike bulky, uncomfortable over-the-counter options, our guards are designed from precise digital scans of your mouth, ensuring a perfect, comfortable fit that you will actually want to wear.

  • Protects against grinding and clenching (bruxism)
  • Alleviates morning headaches and TMJ pain
  • Prevents cracked teeth and worn enamel
  • Custom-fitted for maximum comfort and breathing

How Planning Works

Careful planning follows a predictable, patient-centered sequence.

1

Digital Impressions

We use an intraoral scanner to create a highly accurate 3D model of your upper and lower teeth.

Bite Registration

We record exactly how your upper and lower teeth come together to ensure the guard is balanced.

3

Custom Fabrication

A specialized dental lab crafts the guard from high-quality, durable materials.

I tried three different drugstore night guards and couldn’t sleep with any of them. The custom one Dr. Stuart made is so much thinner and actually stays in place. My morning headaches are completely gone.

My son plays hockey and refused to wear his bulky store-bought mouthguard because he couldn’t breathe well. The custom one from Carmel Family Dental fits perfectly and he actually wears it.

David M. — Indianapolis, IN

I was grinding my teeth so badly I cracked a molar. The dual-laminate guard they made me is surprisingly comfortable. I don’t go to sleep without it now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions.

Over-the-counter guards are bulky, soft, and do not fit precisely. Because they are soft, they actually encourage you to chew on them in your sleep, which can increase muscle tension and worsen jaw pain. Furthermore, because they are not adjusted to your specific bite, they can shift your jaw out of alignment over time.
Many people don’t know they grind their teeth until a dentist points out the wear patterns on their enamel. Other common signs include waking up with a dull headache, a sore or tired jaw, sensitive teeth, or a partner telling you they hear you grinding at night.
It depends on the severity of your grinding. For a heavy grinder, a guard might last 1 to 2 years. For a light grinder, it can last 5 years or more. Bring your guard to your 6-month checkups so we can inspect it for wear and clean it.
Brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and cool water after every use. Do not use hot water, as it can warp the plastic. Do not use abrasive toothpaste, which can scratch it. You can soak it occasionally in a retainer cleaner or mild soap.
There is a short adjustment period (usually a few nights) where it feels a bit unusual, and you may produce more saliva. However, because our custom guards are thin and fit securely, most patients adapt very quickly and find they actually sleep better because their jaw muscles can relax.
Many dental insurance plans provide partial coverage for a custom night guard (occlusal guard) if it is deemed medically necessary to treat bruxism. We will check your specific benefits before proceeding.
Most night guards are designed to fit over the top teeth, as this is usually the most comfortable and stable. However, depending on your bite or if you have specific dental work (like braces or missing teeth), we may design a lower guard instead.
A night guard does not ‘cure’ TMJ disorders, but it is often the most effective first step in managing the symptoms. By providing a smooth surface for the teeth to glide against and slightly opening the bite, it allows the jaw muscles to relax and reduces pressure on the temporomandibular joint.
