Digital X-Rays & Diagnostics consultation at Carmel Family Dental

Clarity, Safety, and Precision

While a visual exam is essential, a dentist can only see about a third of your tooth structure. The roots, the bone supporting the teeth, and the spaces between teeth are completely hidden from view. That is why diagnostic imaging is a critical component of preventive care.

At Carmel Family Dental, we use 100% digital X-ray technology. Not only do digital X-rays emit up to 90% less radiation than old-fashioned film, but they also appear instantly on our monitors. We can zoom in, adjust contrast, and show you exactly what is happening in your mouth, making you an active participant in your healthcare.

  • Up to 90% less radiation than traditional film
  • Instant, high-resolution images
  • Detects decay between teeth
  • Evaluates bone health and root infections
  • Allows for co-diagnosis on large monitors

★★★★★

I love that they show the X-rays on a big screen right in front of the chair. Dr. Schraeder pointed out exactly where a small cavity was starting. It makes so much sense when you can see it yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions.

Yes, they are exceptionally safe. We use digital X-rays, which emit up to 90% less radiation than traditional film. To put it in perspective, a routine set of four bitewing X-rays exposes you to about the same amount of radiation you receive from a short airplane flight or simply living on Earth for a day.
For most adults with a healthy mouth, we recommend bitewing X-rays (to check for cavities between teeth) once a year. A full mouth series or panoramic X-ray is typically recommended every 3 to 5 years. If you have active decay or gum disease, we may recommend them more frequently.
You always have the right to refuse any treatment. However, because a dentist cannot see between your teeth or below the gums without them, refusing X-rays means we cannot perform a complete, standard-of-care examination. We may not be able to treat you if we cannot properly diagnose your condition.
Yes. The American Dental Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists both state that dental X-rays are safe during pregnancy with appropriate shielding (a lead apron with a thyroid collar). However, we often postpone routine X-rays until after delivery for your peace of mind, unless there is a dental emergency.
Bitewings only show the crowns of the back teeth to check for cavities. A panoramic X-ray shows the entire upper and lower jaw, the TMJ joints, the sinuses, and all the roots. It is essential for checking for impacted wisdom teeth, cysts, tumors, and bone abnormalities.
Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is an advanced X-ray that creates a 3D model of your teeth, bone, and nerve pathways. We use this specifically for complex procedures like planning dental implant placement or difficult root canals.
Yes, if they are recent (usually taken within the last 6-12 months) and of diagnostic quality. You can request your previous office to email them to us securely before your appointment.
They are much more comfortable than traditional film because they have rounded edges. If you have a small mouth or a strong gag reflex, let us know. We have techniques and different sensor sizes to make the process as comfortable as possible.
