Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions.

Dental implants are made of titanium, which can be scratched by the standard metal scaling tools used on natural teeth. Scratches create places for bacteria to hide, which can lead to peri-implantitis (implant failure). We use special non-metal instruments to safely clean implants.
We highly recommend patients with traditional braces get professional cleanings every 3 to 4 months instead of every 6 months. Brackets and wires trap plaque easily, significantly increasing the risk of cavities and permanent white spot lesions on the enamel.
Yes. Our advanced polishing techniques are highly effective at removing extrinsic (surface) stains caused by coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco. If the stains are intrinsic (inside the tooth), we can discuss professional whitening options.
We use specialized floss threaders to pass the floss under the pontic (the false tooth) and clean the gums and the sides of the anchor teeth. We will also demonstrate how you can do this at home.
In most cases, an advanced cleaning is billed to your insurance under the same code as a standard prophylaxis or periodontal maintenance. The difference is in the specialized techniques and tools we use, not necessarily the cost to you.
A water flosser (like a Waterpik) uses a pulsating stream of water to flush plaque and food debris from between teeth and below the gumline. We highly recommend them for patients with braces, implants, or bridges, as they clean around hardware much easier than string floss.
Usually, no. Our hygienists are skilled at cleaning around the wires. However, if you are due for a wire change at your orthodontist, scheduling your cleaning for the same day (while the wire is off) allows for the most thorough cleaning possible.
Yes! Bring your removable appliances (retainers, night guards, clear aligners, or partial dentures) to your cleaning appointment. We can professionally clean and disinfect them in our ultrasonic cleaner while we clean your teeth.
